Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, and East Tennessee felt it the way you see a light go out in your own house. She was ours first, before she ever belonged to the rest of the world. This gallery covers the days leading into our season opener and the tribute we built to honor her. Part of it is Neyland; the grounds crew laying stripes and checkerboards into the grass, the stadium huge and quiet in the early heat before a hundred thousand people fill it. The rest is a farmhouse on a hill outside Newport, where we shot the heart of the piece. An old sewing machine and a broom on the porch. A rose plant going into red clay along the fence line at golden hour. A dog at the gate, a boy in the clover, a family on the couch celebrating a UT touchdown. My job was to be there for all of it and to document the story.
